Turkey vultures (ヒメコンドル)

うちの近所では、Turkey vultures (ヒメコンドル)が舞うように飛んでいる風景をよく見かけます。

普段は、気持ち良さそうに空高く飛び回る姿を遠くから見るだけなのですが、
今日はなんと近所の路上で見ることが出来ました。
車に跳ねられた野うさぎの死骸を、つんつんと口ばしで突付きながら食べていました。

こんなに近くで見るのは初めてで、私はドキドキ。
カメラのシャッターが下りる度に、ヒメコンドルもチラチラと私の方を見ながらドキドキの様子。

噂には聞いていましたが、やっぱりハゲ。
食いしん坊のヒメコンドルは死骸に頭を埋めてまで食べる為、頭の羽に付いた腐肉にバクテリアが湧きハゲてしまうそうです。

I usually see them soaring in the sky over the field across the street.
But today I got to take a close look at Turkey vultures eating a roadkill "a poor rabbit" hit by a car. 

As I read somewhere about their head, they were bald indeed.   They were sticking  their head inside the carcass to reach the meat.  I heard that a feathery head got bald as it would capture unwanted pieces of the vulture's meal along with all the bacteria.
